As COVID-19 vaccines become more available to the public, more and more people are wondering if it’s still necessary to wear a face mask out in public.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, the agency may revise its guidelines on wearing masks in public.
“We’ll be looking at the outdoor masking question, but also in the context of the fact that we still have people who are dying of COVID-19,” she said on NBC’s Today show.
The current CDC guidance, updated April 9, dictates:
“Masks may not be necessary when you are outside by yourself away from others, or with people who live in your household. However, some areas may have mask mandates while out in public, so please check the rules in your local area (such as in your city, county, or state).”
The Verdict
While there is still risk of virus transmission outdoors, medical professionals recommend following basic protocol: wearing a face mask and practicing social distancing when outdoors.
Although vaccinations have added an extra layer of safety for most of the public, it’s still necessary to practice caution as we continue to battle COVID-19.
